Persuasive Essay for October 22, 2013

The teenage brain is in a very different state of development than an adult’s, and that is why I chose to research it a little more. There are many things that are going on in today’s society that we do not know, or only know the basics of. When it comes to teenagers, look around you; what are they doing? Are they on their phones? Are they playing video games? Are they on social networking sites? The answers to every one of those questions are probably the same, yes.

Since most teenagers are playing video games in their spare time, maybe we should look into that situation a little more. For starters, the majority of the teenage “gamer” population are playing violent games, whether they are on a mission to kill others, or stealing from someone and running from the cops afterwards. Regardless of how exactly the games are violent, they are. Studies have shown that the teenagers that are playing these violent games, or watching them being played are becoming violent themselves. The brain changes do not seem to be permanent, but for the short period of time, the changes are similar to those with destructive sociopathic disorders.

Another major subject for teenagers would be the internet and social networking sites. Are teenagers that are frequently involved in social media more likely to be involved in risky behaviors? I feel like the internet is one reason that teenagers are the way they are today. When it comes to taking risks, if a group of people are bragging about doing something and someone sees it, chances are, they are going to want to try it too. For example, drugs, if a teenager or a group of teenagers are talking about getting “turnt up”, more teenagers are going to want to experience that feeling as well.

In today’s society, it seems like teenagers are only as smart as everyone they are around. For some reason, teenagers do not want to acknowledge that this is the real world, and that they need to grow up. Everyone wants to be exactly what they are not, and it just does not make sense. If you know you have the potential to get an education, and do something with your life why would you throw it all away just to be with your “friends”? teenagers need to realize that there education is the most important thing in their lives at this point.

The last, but not least important topic would have to be about starting school later than it is now. No, I am not saying that it should start at 12 and end at 2, or something off of the wall like that. What I am saying is, I believe that school should start around 10 and last until 4. I feel like that is plenty long enough to go five days a week for an education. As a teenager, you are expected to have around 8 hours of sleep, but the majority of the, do not even get half of that, yet alone close. It is natural for a teenager to stay up late and of course wake up late, so why would the schools not compromise and start and end later? I feel like there would be a higher graduation population if school systems would compromise even the slightest bit. This is only my opinion though, so take it as you please.

Assignment: Read the following links:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2013/09/04/mcdonalds-dollar-menu-extra-value-menu/2763981/ www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/08/29/fast-food-workers-strike-for-higher-pay-in-nearly-60-cities/2726815/ 1. Should McDonalds raise the prices on its "Dollar Menu?" Justify your answer. 2. Should entry level fast food workers be paid a "living wage?"

1. No, I do not believe McDonald's should raise their prices on the "Dollar Menu", because if they raised the menu prices they would also have to raise the wages in order to pay the employees.

2. Considering the fact that McDonald's is a large market around the world, yes. I do believe that the employees could be paid "living wages".

Assignment: Read the following: http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2013/08/27/facebook-governments-demanded-data-on-38k-users/2706071/ 1. Do you think this is invasion of your privacy? Justify your answer. 2. Does this comply with the terms and conditions for use of Facebook? Have you read them? 3. Does this violate your 4th Amendment rights?

1. Yes, I do believe that this is an invasion of privacy.  I do not think that the government should be going on to every single Facebook there is. I feel that the only thing, on any social networking site, that should be seen by anyone is what the public can see, and that is it. The government, along with anyone else, should not be reading through your messages or anything in that area.

2. I honestly have no clue as to what is in the Terms and Conditions on any website. I have no interest in ever scrolling through the Terms and Conditions, yet alone, reading it. I'm almost positive my life will never be so bad that reading the Terms and Conditions is what I have to resort to. However, I am pretty sure that somewhere in the terms, it hacking completely into every Facebook should not be allowed.

3. The Fourth Amendment is an amendment to the United States Constitution and part of the Bill of Rights. It prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and requires any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause. So, yes, this does violate our rights.

Assignment: 1. Go to the following site and write your response to the article on YOUR blog!!!! http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/08/26/south-carolina-charleston-wild-wing-cafe-black-americans/2704125/ 2. Class discussion of South Carolina Laws....are they unconstitutional???

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that they forced that group of 25 colored to leave that restaurant because ONE person felt "threatened". If I would have been the owner/manager of that restaurant, I would have made the lady leave that felt offended by someone's color. I might understand this situation if it had happened years ago, but today, we should all realize equality is here. That lady had no reason to feel threatened, they were all as human as she is. The group of people may have had a different skin color, but they clearly had more respect as well.

Phrase From "I Have a Dream" Speech; August 29, 2013

Assignment: Select one of the following and write what you think Dr. King meant by
the statement and why was it relevant for the time period.

Selected Phrase: "Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred."

I think by saying "Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred" Martin Luther King, Jr. meant that when you are searching for your freedom, you should not be judging others by something they have absolutely no control of. Being free does not mean you are free to judge others only for the simple reason that you are not happy with your life. During the time that Martin Luther King, Jr. made the "I Have a Dream" speech, there were slavery and equality issues.
